A New Yoga Script for Restorative Yoga and Savasana
/Exciting announcement! I just published a new yoga script: the Restorative Yoga Script with Savasana Meditations.
This script is designed for teachers who are building their confidence and practicing how to hold space for a quiet, calming class. This is a great tool to incorporate restorative postures into your class without stressing out about what to say as you lead students through the class. It’s one of my favorite meditation scripts for yoga.
The sequence is great for anyone with lower back pain or tight hips, or whose stress levels have been high.
When I first started teaching yoga, I struggled with knowing how to lead a class like this. My training was all about a strong power flow type of class— the kind that left you sweaty and tired in the best way. I quickly found that friends, family and students were asking for another kind of class that would balance out their practice.
“Do you ever do gentle classes?”
“Have you ever done a vin/yin class? I’d be interested.”
“What do you recommend for a restorative practice?”
Early on, I didn’t have many resources to answer these questions, nor did I feel comfortable leading a class like this! My comfort zone was to fill most of the class with dialogue, to keep things moving, and to specialize in working with yogis who wanted a great workout from their practice.
I had no idea how much relief it would give me to have meditation scripts for yoga! Instead of fumbling through my words trying to remember what was next, I made myself memorize a sequence and teach it over and over again. Once I had the sequence down, I started to enjoy teaching a slow, mindful, rejuvenating class like this much more.
Over time, I’ve learned how powerful it is to teach restorative poses and offer students a class that can help them calm their nervous systems and sloooowwww down. Our world moves at such a fast pace. If we’re going through something stressful, a restorative yoga class can help us balance this and find moments of inner peace. It can give us the time and space to process how we’re really doing, and what we feel in our bodies.
Plus, Savasana at the end of class is essential! No matter what kind of yoga class you’re teaching, this pose is such an important way to end the class. When I was a brand new teacher fresh out of teacher training, I often struggled wondering exactly what I should do during this pose. (Having meditation scripts for yoga was again a gamechanger).
Should I just sit there quietly? Should I chant? Read something inspiring? Tell a story?
While I think every teacher has to find their own style for how to lead Savasana, I felt like it was helpful at first to read something short and then give students a chance to sit in the quiet. I like playing music for some of Savasana but then having some silence at the very end.
The meditations I wrote at the end of this new e-book are designed to give students a way to relax and listen to the guided voice of their teacher. Especially for newer students who might struggle to lie there quietly in this pose, these words can be an anchor that guides them into relaxation. If you’re not used to planning meditations for yoga class or meditation scripts for letting go, this tool is going to help you so much! Then you can relax and feel more comfortable knowing what to say when teaching yoga.
You could also read these Savasana meditations to yourself as a relaxation tool from home!
Here’s the script. I hope you find it helpful and as always let me know if you have any questions or feedback.
Much love,
Rachel
