10 Things to Do After Finishing a Yoga Teacher Training

Yoga teacher training is just the beginning. Now that you’re certified, here are a few steps to help you move forward in your teaching career.

  1. Teach regularly. Even if you’re not hired on right away at a studio or gym, create teaching opportunities for yourself by hosting small classes for friends and family, putting on a yoga in the park class, or volunteering. Use these classes to gain valuable feedback.

  2. Understand your why. Your reasons for teaching yoga have likely evolved as you moved through teacher training. What is your intention now? What impact are you hoping to make? How do you want to grow personally as a result of teaching? Take some time to reflect on the bigger picture and allow that to inspire your teaching.

  3. Get a copy of your teaching certificate. Scan it so you can send digital copies to the places where you’re teaching.

  4. Consider liability insurance. Depending on where you teach, you may be covered if you’re hired on as an employee. If you’re teaching completely on your own (like out of your house or out of someone else’s house), you may want to consider getting your own coverage.

  5. Get CPR certified. Many gyms and studios require it, plus it’s a great skill to have for any yoga teacher.

  6. Write a yoga resume. Track when and where you teach and what your responsibilities are while you’re there. Include info about sales, special workshops, community events, or other unique skills you bring to the table.

  7. Consider building a website and social media accounts to promote your classes and workshops. If you’re not a fan of marketing, get help with this step so you don’t get stressed out by it!

  8. Gather a list of people you know in your local yoga community— your network of mentors, colleagues, potential employers and supporters. Lean on these people for support. Ask for help. Ask for insight. You’ll grow immensely when you tap into your network.

  9. Determine the areas where you can grow and ask for help with them. Begin to normalize receiving feedback without taking anything personally.

  10. Identify your goals for the next 3, 6, and 12 months. Write them down and get specific. The more you can focus, the better you’ll do with achieving your goals.
