Caring for Your Mind and Body
/Healing is possible, and change starts with YOU!
If you are looking to incorporate sustainable habits into your healthy lifestyle, it’s important to bring an attitude of patience and compassion. Real change is difficult.
Here are some small steps you can take to boost your health—mentally, physically and emotionally.
Move Your Body
Movement is medicine! Start with something simple today. If you haven’t been very active in a while, I recommend 20-30 minutes. Walk, jog, take a bike ride… meet a friend at a cool spot to go for a hike. Or you could roll out your yoga mat, or have an impromptu dance party! Instead of feeling like you need to take up a new sport or learn something fancy, just get moving for a bit and see how you feel.
Get Back to Basics
Healing my relationship to food has been a huge part of my wellness journey. Sometimes it can be overwhelming to make changes with what I’m eating or cooking, and I generally make it a practice to ask myself why I want to make a change in the first place.
If you are struggling with disordered eating, or feeling like you have willpower to choose, I suggest:
Adding more greens to your plate
Cutting back on processed food
Having fruit after dinner
Tracking how much water you’re drinking
Giving yourself permission to enjoy your food and not be “perfect”
This can be a process. Give yourself grace, and be extremely kind to yourself.
Improve Your Posture
Spinal health is essential if you want to feel amazing in your body. If you spend a lot of time sitting or working from a computer, consider adding yoga and stretch breaks to your routine. There are also some cool tools out there that you can try, like the posture corrector app from obvus.me. Massage, chiropractic care, myofascial release and dynamic stretching are also helpful for reducing chronic tension in the body and improving your posture.
10 Minutes of Mindfulness
Consider building in a ten-minute window into your day that’s all about slowing down, focusing on how you feel, and letting go of stress. You might meditate or do yoga, or start your day with a deep stretch every morning. You could also pull out your journal and write down a few thoughts. Pick something that feels nourishing to your spirit.
